History

The name of the Ranthambore National Park has its origins in the historic Ranthambore fortress that is situated amidst the park itself. It came into existence in 1955 and the honor goes to the Indian Government. Earlier it was considered only as a Sawai Madhopur Game Sanctuary but in 1973, the Government declared it as one of the Tiger Reserves. It got its present designation, the National Park in 1980.

Besides the wild life, Ranthambore is also a place where one can enjoy the beautiful architecture manifested in the many buildings that are part of this park. There is a massive fort and a number of towers located over the park. Additionally, the ruins of the previous eras can be seen scattered all over the forest.
